STEP BY STEP: Patina

We can find fabulous things in the antiquarians, but sometimes these treasures are old, battered with time and use and outdated. To get the real sparkle of the objects from the past and create a new story for them, is essential to remodel, repair or paint. The patina is one of the best practices for beautifying frames and antique furniture, while maintaining it’s vintage essence.

Materials:

1. Antique Frame

2. Glue

3. Cloth

4. Brads

5. Hammer

6. Sand paper N180

7. Putty knife

8. Latex,matte white acrylic paint

9. Paint brush

10. Brush with big bristles

11. Bitumen (shoe polish)

12. Swiss Wax

Step by Step:

1. Choose an antique frame.

Paste with glue the joints. Clean the excess using a cloth. Use headless brads to strengthen the union of the pieces.

1. Sand the frame with sanding sheet (small grain, about N180), always following the veins (so it doesn’t scratch). You may use a spatula to remove the excess paint. Remove dust with a dry cloth.

1. Paint a white layer (latex / white matte acrylic paint). Let it dry for a while (about 20 minutes depending on weather conditions).

1. Once dried, sand superficially to remove any dust that was left. Give another coat of white paint (latex).

1. With a brush with big bristles add bitumen and slide with Swiss wax . If you want it darker, darken with more bitumen, for a clearer effect, I add more wax. Repite until you achieve the vintage look you want.

1. Clean with a dry cloth… and voila! Old is the new NEW!
